Baby Shower Weekend in Austin

Last weekend I felt incredibly blessed. My amazing friends here in Austin threw me a baby shower! I was so happy to spend time with so many of my friends, old and new. The whole time I was there I kept thinking how grateful I was to have met so many great girls in the shortish time we have lived in Austin. I will be so sad when we have to move at the end of the summer.

My mother-in-law and sister-in-law also came, which was so sweet of them. Both of them had quite a drive to be there (from San Antonio and from Dallas) but I was grateful they were able to come.

It's already been pointed out to me how chubby my face looks in these pictures, but I'm over it, and I'm going to post the pictures anyway. #1 it was a hot day, #2 I was pretty sweaty and a bit swollen, and #3 the weight has to go somewhere, right? For me it's just on my face!

And this is Katie, my friend who threw me the shower. She did an amazing job!

After all the baby shower festivities, Glen and Breck showed up to help us gather gifts.

The Ellsworth family spent the rest of the day together. We did a little shopping at Ikea, got donuts at our favorite place--Round Rock Donuts, and then later on had dinner at the Iguana Grill. Iguana Grill is a really great restaurant that sits overlooking Lake Travis. It was beautiful weather so we ate outside and enjoyed the view. We couldn't believe that we were eating on the patio on February 2. Gotta love Texas!

The next day was the super bowl, and somehow we convinced Breck and Brielle to stay an extra day (hooray!!) and have a party with us since neither of us had any super bowl plans. We did our best to pull together some yummy snacks and treats and we had a fun time. We were so glad they stayed, but even more glad that they made it back home safely that night when they left at 10 pm with a 3.5 hour drive ahead!

After Breck and Brielle left, Glen had a genius idea to stack the air mattress on our bed for fun. Glen calls it "mega-bed." We laid up there for a bit, but realized if either of us sat up we were dangerously close to our ceiling fan, which is always on. But it made for some good laughs, especially when trying to hoist an 8-month pregnant woman up that high.

Overall, it was such a wonderful weekend.

Difficulties

If you ask me what the hardest part about my pregnancy has been, I would say the weight gain.

Not the weeks of throwing up, not the constant back pain, not the uncomfortable, sleepless nights. Not even the 4 hospital visits we've had to make so far.

It's looking down at the scale and seeing a much bigger number than I ever expected to see. It's my wedding ring getting tighter and tighter on my finger. It's the few stretch marks that have started to form on my sides.

Obviously, I knew that weight gain was a MAJOR part of pregnancy before we made this decision to have a baby. Obviously, I knew. But I was not prepared for how it would affect me psychologically. I didn't gain any weight the first 4 months because I was terribly sick with "all day" sickness. Morning sickness is what I would call a good day, when I only threw up once or twice in the morning. But generally it was all day, all night. Then it went away and my body tried to catch up, REAL fast. And that's when things got difficult.

When I started to gain weight I could not get rid of the little voice in my head telling me that the number I was seeing on the scale was embarrassing and unacceptable, even though I had this other, more rational voice telling me that having a healthy baby means gaining weight. And people keep saying things to me like "Yes, but it's normal!" and "Don't worry, you will lose it all when you start to breast feed" and "It's okay, I knew someone who gained X amount of weight, so it could be way worse."

Yes, I KNOW all this already. But knowing these things wasn't changing the way I felt. And the pregnancy hormones do not help my self-esteem, that's for dang sure.

Anyway, I think one reason it has been so difficult for me psychologically is for the last 8 or so years of my life I have worked REALLY hard to never again let this chubby girl take over my body. (See picture below, and yes, it's okay to laugh)

I was moderately overweight until I was entering the 9th grade when I had a small growth spurt, which helped a bit, and then it took another 2 years of exercise and eating better to lose an additional 10-15 pounds. I was able to keep it off until I got married. After that I fluctuated a bit, but I was still never heavier than I was my first 2 years of high school.

So after years of watching my weight and exercising, I now had to suddenly adjust to no exercise, and lots of weight gain.

Why no exercise, you ask?

I was on bedrest the first 14 weeks of pregnancy and then more of a "take it easy" bedrest for another 6 weeks because I had issues with bleeding. In fact, doctors gave us a 50% chance that our little boy would even make it past the first trimester because I had already had 2 ER visits with heavy bleeding, which I was told several times was not "normal." Even now that baby is in the "safe" zone, exercising still causes me to bleed, so it is not an option for me during this pregnancy.

So again, working really hard for years to maintain my weight and then suddenly not be able to exercise plus me starting to gain a lot of weight (in addition to trying to manage all my cravings that were definitely not for healthy food) has been difficult for me.

It's taken a long time for me to accept the fact that it's okay that I am gaining weight and that I will look and feel heavier for a little while longer. I don't think I have fully accepted it, but some days are better than others. If nothing else, I know these feelings will really motivate me to lose it after I have my baby.

My husband has been such a great support. Truly. He is always saying that I am beautiful BECAUSE I'm pregnant, not "even though" I'm pregnant. He tells me every day that I look something like this:

Even though every day I feel a lot like this:

But every time I feel that way I try to focus my thoughts on this:

Despite my struggles, I AM so incredibly grateful for my little baby boy that is growing in my belly, and I can't wait to meet him. And the complications we've had have reminded me every day how blessed I am to still have this baby. I remember that every time I feel down or every time that evil little voice in my head tell me it's not okay to gain weight. It's crazy how our insecurities can really attack us when we least expect it—during what is one of the happiest times in my life. It's definitely been something I've been working through with lots of prayer.

I am grateful for so many things. And I only have 2 months left! But I would be lying if I pretended like pregnancy for me has been great and that I've been graceful about it. Definitely not. But I know when we have difficult times in our lives it's usually because we're needing to learn something or further refine ourselves. So I am going to use these next 9 weeks to try to learn something :).

Pregnancy: Week by Week Photos

Hello again friends!

I have been feeling guilty lately for not being a better blogger throughout this pregnancy. It's been a difficult pregnancy, so blogging about it has not been a top priority. But I really love reading all my friends' blogs when they are pregnant, so I decided I'd try my best to blog for these last 10 weeks of pregnancy.

So, because it's so cliche, and because I know you all love it (right?), this post will consist mostly of week by week pregnancy photos. I hate them all so much (which I'll probably go into more detail about in another post) but oh well. I'm getting over it. Enjoy!

Boy Oh Boy

Hello friends and family!

I really need to get better at this blogging thing. It's not even that I feel like I have to, I really LIKE blogging, but my A.D.D. causes me to get distracted with other projects and events and I forget that I like blogging so much.

Also, Glen and I are super busy being ward missionaries! We love it! I am meeting so many great people and am learning how to teach and be more comfortable bearing my testimony and talking about what I believe in. It's really neat. I am also learning about the frustrations of being a missionary, and I have so much more respect for missionaries now! It's so hard not to get disappointed when something doesn't work out or someone changes their mind so I admire the missionaries who stay positive and don't get down on themselves.

And as most of you now know, I am pregnant! We went "public" just a couple weeks ago so things have started to feel more real. We kept quiet about it for quite a while, something I'll probably blog about at some point, but we are happy that so many people expressed their excitement. We are having a little boy! I come from a family of mostly girls, so I am kind of scared to death of raising a boy, but I'm hoping I figure it out and my awesome friends who also have boys can give me some pointers! You know who you are!

So, I was kinda bummed that I didn't get to have a fun "gender reveal" party to tell my family what we were having, so I decided to make my family have one and skype with us! I called up my talented friend Nicole Campbell, owner of Mmm Cake Co. , to see if she could whip up some fun cupcakes for the party! After our ultrasound I called Nicole and told her what we were having! It was exciting because it was the first time I had said the words "We are having a boy!" She was thrilled and came up with an awesome design for cupcakes and filled them with blue filling.

My family waited a full 48 hours until having the party. They were really patient which we were grateful for. My sister Kelsey picked up the cupcakes and then connected with us on skype. Kelsey made some simple decorations and lips and mustaches for everyone to declare what their guesses were. It was so much fun to watch, even if it was on the computer.  Here are some pictures taken by the wonderful Lauren Faber, one of my sister's BFFs:

Hooray! It was an excellent party and we were happy to be there via skype. Thanks again to Nicole Campbell from Mmm Cake Co. and Lauren Faber for taking awesome pics!
