Call Me Crazy... But That Walmart Looks Like a Bush.

In the past week I've had more free time than I've had, probably since before I was in kindergarten. Seriously! It's the first September since 1993 (see figure A.) that I'm not gearing up for the new school year. When I started seeing everyone's facebook statuses about the first day of school I was kind of sad.

But that only lasted about 30 seconds.

Figure A.
Me and my dad on the first day of school. This could actually be 1994, but close enough.

So in my spare time (aside from applying for jobs etc.) I have been watching movies, playing my piano, reading books, and surfin' the net,-- which can get incredibly boring once you've been doing it for hours. But every now and then, while I've been doing the latter, I come across something that I think is hilarious. I will share one of these treasures with you now.

It's called...

How to Plan a Tween Sleepover

Plan a Tween Sleepover
How to Plan a Tween Sleepover

Sleepovers can provide hours of fun for tweens, kids ages 8 to 12. To plan a fun tween sleepover, you'll need organization, creativity and a lot of sleep before the party starts.

Difficulty: Moderate

Instructions

1. Determine your rules for the sleepover party. Decide on how many kids you'll allow your child to invite. Four to six children is best. Plan where the tweens will sleep and determine what time they will go to bed.

2. Shop for snacks that tweens enjoy, as well as some healthier options. Pick up some chips, pretzels, candy, pure fruit juice and vegetables with dip. Involve your tween in the selection.

3. Plan a list of activities for the sleepover. Consider having the tweens make their own individual mini-pizzas, create a scavenger hunt for objects you've hidden around your house and in your yard, set up a craft table for art projects or allow the tweens to bake cookies.

4. Research some popular tween movies and rent them or borrow them from library. Ask your tween for a list of her preferences to make the process easier.

5. Play some of your tween's favorite music during the sleepover party. Encourage the tweens to make up their own dances. Provide them with hair brushes, spatulas and spoons so they can act like rock stars.

6. Set out board games for the tweens to play after you've gone to bed. This activity is generally quieter than the others you might have planned.

7. Pitch a few tents outside in your yard. Host the tween slumber party there instead of inside your house. Encourage the tweens to tell each other scary stories while gathered around a small fire in an outdoor fire pit. Stay with the tweens to supervise the fire.

Don't you love it? My favorites are 2, 5, and 7. And I don't even know how I came across this article, but that's what I love about the internet.

Anyway, this article got me thinking about the sleepover parties I used to have. Man, they were fun, even if they weren't as planned out as above. I do remember, however, rocking out to Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys on occasion, although we probably wouldn't have if our parents had encouraged us to (see above article, number 5), because that would probably be awkward. I'm actually feeling weird right now imagining my mom smiling and telling me and my friends to make up our own dance moves and pretend to be rock stars.

Now friends, correct me if I'm wrong, but most of our sleepovers did not involve said healthy snacks. All I remember is Pizza, Salt and Vinegar Chips, and Salsa con Queso dip. I'm pretty sure if someone's parent handed us a tray of veggies we would have thrown them across the room in anger. Not only because they were vegetables and we were still young enough to think they were gross, but because we were all going through that pre-teen stage where we were really moody and didn't think our parents understood us.

Here is a picture of me and most of my friends at a sleepover party that was awesome:

And now most of my friends probably hate me. But it is all in jest you guys! You love and miss it, you know it. And I know it.

New topic. So I suppose I should speak of some adventures that involve my husband as well. My grandparents Galan drove through Austin on Wednesday on their way to visit Corpus Christi, which is their hometown and where many of their family members and friends live. So we decided to get some dinner with them and since Grandma was already sick of Whataburger (my Grandpa LOVES Whataburger, and apparently they had already gone twice. Who knows how many more visits they'll make during their trip) we decide to get some Chinese food. Then we took a short trip to Round Rock Donuts, again, which we enjoyed thoroughly. We made it there safely, thanks to our GPS.

About the GPS... she was hating on us last week. We decided to go to Walmart. We searched for the nearest Walmart and first it took us here:

What the? So we typed it in again and it took us here:

So we both laughed and decided that there was no way it could mess up again.

But it did:

So we look at each other and say, "Really?" and then for the fourth time, make the search for a Walmart. By now we are just trying to get out of this ghetto of a place before we get shot.

So then, our GPS takes us here:

Well. At least bein' in the middle of the road is better than the ghetto.

Enjoy your long weekend!
